Winterizing essentials
Cold weather is hard on a vehicle in predictable ways. A short routine before the first freeze keeps you safer and reduces the odds of a no-start morning.

Battery and charging
Cold reduces a battery's available cranking power while thicker oil makes the engine harder to turn over. Have the battery and charging system tested as temperatures drop, and clean any corrosion on the terminals.
Antifreeze and fluids
Confirm your coolant mixture is rated for your climate and that washer fluid is a winter formula that resists freezing. Top off levels and inspect for leaks under the vehicle.
Visibility
Swap worn wiper blades, check that the rear defroster works, and keep an ice scraper in the car. Clear glass is the cheapest safety upgrade you can make.
Quick checklist
- Test the battery and charging system
- Verify coolant rating for your climate
- Switch to winter washer fluid
- Replace worn wiper blades
- Check cold tire pressure monthly
